What is Fair Banding?

Fair banding is a way for Brompton Academy to use a standardized test to group children by ability into bands. This helps Brompton Academy admit a balanced mix of students with different abilities.

Key Points for Parents:

  • Standardized Test: Your child takes a reasoning and problem-solving test, not a curriculum exam. It’s not pass or fail.

  • Ability Bands: Based on the test, children are placed into ability bands (5 levels).

  • Balanced Admissions: Schools allocate places fairly across these bands to ensure a diverse range of abilities.

  • Oversubscription: If more children apply than places available, the bands help decide who gets in.

  • Fairness: This system aims to be fairer and more inclusive than just using postcode or catchment areas.

  • Accessible to All: Tests are designed to be fair regardless of background, and schools can offer adjustments for children with special educational needs.
