Subject Profiles

The Dance curriculum will benefit all students in developing an understanding of culture, society, artistic and critical appreciation and creative thinking.

We are encouraging the skills needed for a five year GCSE Dance programme.  This is to reflect the changes to the assessment criteria of a 60% Practical and 40% Theory assessment.

Year 7

12 Week Carousel:  Introduction to dance, developing dance literacy skills, movement repertoire, choreographic devices.

Year 8

12 Week Carousel: Using professional works, extending written and oracy skills in dance, choreographic structures, staging dance.

Phase Two AQA GCSE Dance (Year 9 – 11)

Year 9

Term One: Technical Skills. Safe Practice. Introduction   Choreography

Term Two: Performance Skills. Motif and development. ASDR

Term Three: Contact work. Professional Works. Choreographic processes

Term Four: Duet/Trio Choreography. Using a stimulus.

Term Five: Professional works.  Introduction to constituent features.

Term Six: Professional Works.

Year 10

Term One: Technical and Performance Skills. Choreography. Short and long answer questions regarding own practice

Term Two: Technical and Performance Skills.  Choreography. Short and long answer questions regarding constituent features of Professional Work 1.

Term Three: Technical and Performance Skills.  Choreography. Short and long answer questions regarding constituent features of Professional Work 2.

Term Four: Technical and Performance Skills.  Choreography. Short and long answer questions regarding constituent features of Professional Work 3.

Term Five: Technical and Performance Skills.  Choreography. Short and long answer questions regarding constituent features of Professional Work 4.

Term Six: Technical and Performance Skills.  Choreography. Short and long answer questions regarding constituent features of Professional Work 5.

Year 11

Term One: ‘Masterpiece’ Launch of final choreography with workshop sessions to lead students into independent rehearsal out of lessons.  Short and long answer questions regarding constituent features of Professional Work 6

Term Two: Performance Piece Creation and development of performance in a duo/trio

Term Three: Solo Performance Recap, selection and refinement of selected phrases for solo performance.

Term Four: Prepare and Go Final preparations of practical examination. No particular planning as lesson content will be in response to students needs at this specific time.

Term Five: Exam Preparation Range of approaches and workshop style sessions to develop student’s response to exam question and knowledge.

 

Phase Three AQA A Level Dance

Students must complete both assessment components

Component 1: Performance and Choreography

Solo performance linked to a specific area of study

Performance in a Quartet

Group Choreography

Component 2: Critical Engagement

Knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of TWO set works.

One Compulsory set work within the compulsory area of study

One Optional set work within the corresponding area of study.

Compulsory Area of Study: Rambert Dance Company (formerly Ballet Rambert) 1966 – 2002

Compulsory Set Work within the Area of Study: Rooster (Christopher Bruce, 1991)

Optional Area of Study: The independent contemporary dance scene in Britain 2000 - Current

Optional Compulsory Set Work Sutra (Lidi Larbi Cherkaoui, 2008)

The course works to embed Practical and Theory work with all areas of study being taught through a variety of ways.

Year One

Term One: Exploring Technical and Expressive Skills.  Critical Appreciation

Term Two: Solo Choreography.  Compulsory area of Study: Rooster by Christopher Bruce

Term Three:  Solo Choreography and Programme Note. Critical Appreciation

Term Four: Solo and Quartet Choreography. Optional Set Work: Sutra by Lidi Larbi Cherkaoui

Term Five: Choreography and composition for solo and group.

Term Six: Mock examination of Solo, Quartet and Compulsory areas of study.

Year Two 

Term One: Group Choreography externally set task released.  Optional Set Work: Sutra by Lidi Larbi Cherkaoui

Term Two: Choreography development. Compulsory Area of Study: Analysing Rooster and works by Richard Alston and Siobhan Davies.

Term Three: Completion of Practical Choreographies and Compositions.  Critical Appreciation

Term Four: Completion of Practical Choreographies and Compositions.  Critical Appreciation

Term Five: Preparation for practical and theory examinations.

Exam board for Dance is AQA.
