Subject Profile Art & Design Woolf Mini School 2017/2018

Phase One Art Year 7

All students in Year 7 are taught on a rotating carousel.They spend 2 terms in Art. 

Over the 2 terms they will practice a variety of 2D and 3D skills across 3 projects.

Project one: Portraiture with links to artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci.

Project two: African Masks with pattern research. 

Mini project 2: Painting to music using the style of Kandinsky  

Phase One Art  Year 8

All students in Year 8 are taught on a rotating carousel. They spend 2 terms in Art. Over the 2 terms they will practice a variety of 2D skills across 2 projects developing skills to aid them if they choose to undertake a GCSE Art or Photography.

Project one: Cubist Still Life looking at Picasso and other Cubist artists.

Mini project: Identity collection based on Joseph Cornell and Schwitter.

Project two: Rousseau Batik developing traditional skills using a tjanting wax method.

 

Phase Two - 3 Year GCSE Art, Craft & Design 

Art & Design

The Year 9, 10 and 11 students are studying the AQA GCSE in Art & Design in which they will complete 3 units of coursework.  Students will develop skills in 2D and 3D exploring a variety of media, materials and processes. 

Year one 

Terms one/two - Explore the subject of Colour in The Landscape. Students will research relevant themes and study artists who have painted in this genre, such as Van Gogh, David Hockney and Turner. 

Terms three/four -  Develop skills and experiment with relevant media. 

Terms five/six - Students will create their own landscape taking into account what they have learnt so far.

Year two 

Terms one/two - Research Natural Forms and Sculptures inspired by Moore, Giacometti and Hepworth. 

Terms three/four - Experimentation with 3 dimensional media.

Terms five/six - Making sculpture based on their learning.

Year three 

Terms one/two - What is portraiture? 

Terms three/four/five - Externally set examination unit.

Together the coursework is 60% of the course. The examination is 40% of the course.

 

3D Design

The Year 10 and 11 students are studying the AQA GCSE in 3D Design in which they will complete 2 units of coursework.  They will develop skills in 3D exploring a variety of media, materials and processes used in 3 Dimensional design. 

Year one 

Terms one/two -  Explore the subject of iconic chairs. Students will research relevant themes and study artists who designed chairs such as Ray and Charles Eames. 

Terms three/four - Develop skills and experiment with relevant media. 

Terms five/six - Students will create their own model of a chair taking into account what they have learnt so far.

Year two  

Term one - Research clocks and Art Deco design, including the influence of Egyptian Art. 

Term two -  Experimentation with clay and making their clock based on their learning. 

Terms three/four/five - is the externally set examination unit.

Together the coursework is 60% of the course. The examination is 40% of the course.

Specification AQA AS Art, Craft and Design 7241C and X

Art and Design encourages students to follow the creative process and understand and develop the principles of art and design. The course follows creative processes, including 2D and 3D work as well as print, photography, digital art and textiles. You will be encouraged to explore the work of other artists and designers and to develop responses. Your work will take the form of annotated boards and/or sketch books as well as 3D samples.

A-Level - Two Year Course

Art and Design A Level is linear and will run as a two year A-level. Year 12 is a foundation year where by students will develop and refine a variety of skills and techniques that they will then apply to their two A-level units in A2. These will be assessed for their final A Level qualification on a 60/40 split.

During year 12 they will cover 1 unit.  Unit 1 is a Coursework Portfolio and includes workshops and satellite projects to help them build the skills for their personal unit in Year 13. Unit 2 is an Externally Set Assignment that they prepare for in year 13; where they receive a set of 5 questions from the exam board that they must choose one to respond to. They will also have a 10 hour exam within this unit during which they must produce final outcomes and reach a conclusion, this is worth 40% of the final grade. 

Year 12 - Students will learn, develop and refine a variety of skills. They will complete 3 units of work using source material and relevant artists to create inspiring design work. A wide range of media and techniques will be explored, students will secure a sound knowledge of how to create and interpret contextual sources. Students will need to explain the development of their ideas through both written and visual information. Students will need to submit all of their research work and the final piece. This will be the foundation for their A–level.

Year 13 - Unit 1 - Personal Investigation—Internally set - 60%: Example project: Origins – a personal investigation incorporating both visual contextual and written elements. This will take the form of a portfolio of work. Students are encouraged to develop their own personal style and to develop a high level of skill within their chosen specialisms. Students must demonstrate greater maturity and depth in skill, knowledge and knowledge gained from Year 12. Staff will also advise and help to organise portfolio work for students who wish to apply for further education within the Arts.

Year 1

Working through a series of workshops, experiments and development of subject language to build skills, understanding and knowledge.

Year 2:

Term one: Research and analysis

Term two: Develop 2D outcome

Term three: Develop 3D Response. Externally Set Assignment

Term four: Externally Set Assignment

Term five: Prepare for exhibition of work

Unit 2 – Externally set - 40%: This assignment is aimed at assessing the students ability to work independently in response to a chosen starting point carrying out investigation, developing ideas and realising intentions referencing contextual and critical sources. Students will need to submit all of their research work and their final outcomes, which will be carried out over 15 hours in exam conditions.
