Target Setting

The Assessment and Target Setting Process

Brompton Academy no longer awards attainment levels in Years 7 and 8. The focus for all students is the journey to GCSEs from the beginning of Year 7 and so we are providing them with the more familiar A* - G grades across all year groups as well as for Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* grades for BTEC qualifications.

For all students in Years 7-11, the grades achieved at each tracking point will give an indication of the likely GCSE outcomes for each subject. For example, a Year 8 student achieving a B grade in a Maths exam would indicate that a B grade would be a likely GCSE outcome at the end of Year 11 if she/he continued with the same effort levels.   In this way, the Academy operates a ‘horizontal’ rather than a ‘vertical’ robust assessment system.

Students will be awarded fine-grades (eg. B-, B, B+) so that it is clear how secure they are within each grade.

All students now have A*- F targets based on Key Stage 2 Year 6 external tests. For example, a student achieving a 4a (High 4) in English in Year 6 would have a minimum target of a C+ (high C) in English for Years 7 - 11.

This new grading system will contribute to high levels of motivation for students and intends to provide clarity for students and parents/carers.

All mainstream students have ‘minimum’ targets and ‘challenge’ targets based on Key Stage 2 outcomes. The students in the Eliot Centre  have bespoke targets.

There are four sets of exams and corresponding tracking points during each academic year.

In order to prepare students for more rigorous GCSE, A level and BTEC exams, students need to be exposed to more examinations which cover cumulative learning. Students will need to recap previous topics and this will help to secure retention of knowledge as well as to deepen understanding.

During the course of the academic year, there will be four exam-style assessments coinciding with four tracking points.  The first three assessments will be comprised of the following:

1.  50% emphasis on the topic covered during that particular term

2.  50% weighting on the cumulative learning from the start of the academic year (or previous where appropriate)

The final assessment in Term 6 will be an exam covering all of the topics covered during that academic year.

Option Subjects

GCSE option Subjects will have targets based on 3 levels of progress from KS2 attainment levels. The subjects (English or Maths) from which the target is generated are listed below.

BTEC subjects have their targets generated as at least a target of Pass.  Students who have GCSE target grades of ‘B’ would have targets of Merit, ‘A’ grades of Distinction and ‘A*’ grades of Distinction *.

Phase Three Target Setting 2016/2017

Phase Three targets are based on GCSE points scores and are generated using a system designed and generated by ‘SMID’.  This system converts student point scores into aspirational targets for all Level Three qualifications.

(For more information visit - http://www.alps.co.uk/)

Targets for Phase Three students studying Level 2 courses remain the same as for Phase Two students -  3 levels of Progress from the associated Core subject (English / Maths) at KS2.
