Rutherford

Our school is named after Ernest Rutherford born the son of a farmer in New Zealand. He became a chemist and physicist who is known as the father of nuclear physics. He discovered that atoms had nuclei and in doing so, changed the whole world. “It was quite the most incredible event that has ever happened to me in my life. It was almost as incredible as if you fired a 15-inch shell at a piece of tissue paper and it came back and hit you.” In our Mini School we have a passion for Science and we do our utmost to foster the scientific curiosity and fervour that develops learners into independent minded and thoughtful scientists.

Students graduate into the Rutherford Mini School in Year 9, through their option choices which will reflect their enthusiasm for Science. Their curriculum is broad and balanced, not restricted to the scientific disciplines. They enjoy an excellent education across a wide range of subjects. We offer the following specialist courses: PE, Sport BTEC Level 2 and Level 3, Geography GCSE, Science, Science GCSE, Science BTEC, ‘A’ Levels in Physics Chemistry and Biology. This rich offer ensures that every Rutherford student has a pathway from Phase Two into Phase Three and beyond. Our students will leave well prepared for further study (possibly in the fields of Science, Engineering, Medicine or Sports and Sports Science) or the world of work where a scientific approach is very much in demand.

In the Rutherford Mini School we see ourselves as a family. Every student is cared for in all aspects of pastoral and academic care.
